Medieval Badges

Historically, medieval badges are important; however, they are small and lackluster objects that are hard to display in museums due to their size and the specialized knowledge needed to understand the information they convey. Descriptive signage alone is inadequate for explaining the way medieval people used badges to make meaning.

Samir Reynolds, a graduate of the Bachelor of Knowledge Integration program at the University of Waterloo, explored options for making compelling displays of medieval badges in his senior research project. Samir’s exploration ranged from modern technologies, such as augmented reality, 3D software and 3D printing, to using the ancient mode of storytelling, a uniquely human way of conveying knowledge. His findings and conclusions are available for download below.
