Few ancient processes are as mysterious as smelting ore into metallic iron. Just how, exactly, is this done? The exact methods used by the ancients are unknown, but modern experimental archaeology can suggest some possibilities. Independent Researcher Darrell Markewitz of the Wareham Forge will build and operate a bloomery iron furnace, based on the evidence from the Viking Age site at L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. This process will be ongoing during CAMELOT, withfinal extraction of the hot bloom expected after the completion of paper presentations.
